Portraiture in Selective Start from Life & Photos at The Scottsdale Artists' School

ARC Associate Living Master, Tina Garrett is one of the few artists teaching the Selective Start method today. Tina learned this method from “Alla Prima II” by author and artist Richard Schmid and it is her favorite way to approach painting the portrait from life and photos. Learn to see and simplify values, create form, and understand edges and chroma to control your composition and create dramatic portraiture. Tina will teach you how to organize your palette to mix realistic colors, values, and temperatures for different skin types and share two easy strategies to achieve an accurate likeness in your portraiture. Tina will demonstrate creating portraits from both the live model and from photos. You are encouraged to bring your own photos to paint from. You may send them to Tina in advance of this workshop, to be sure they are appropriate quality to use as references. Tina will demonstrate photo editing strategies as well as model posing and lighting knowledge. Each morning Tina will demonstrate and lecture. Each afternoon, Tina will work one-on-one with every artist as they paint from the live model and photos. Tina’s goal is to be as generous with her knowledge as possible, walking each student through the concepts so when artists leave her workshops they are able to take their own painting to new heights. All levels welcome!

Note: This workshop offers two scholarships. Please call The Scottsdale Artists' School: (800) 333-5707 to sign up and to apply. Thank you!

13 Day Tina Garrett Art Adventure in South Africa September 18 - 30, 2019: Stellenbosch - West Coast with Darling - Simonstown - Somerset West - Cape Town - Kruger Park

Travel with artist Tina Garrett to the magical land of South Africa.

Explore South Africa with Tina Garrett and her artistic perception. Enjoy personal connections and casual discussions as together we discover the faces of South Africa from the museums and historic sites of the characters in history to the indigenous and modern people of present-day life in South Africa. In addition to classes with demonstrations and lectures with hands-on sketching and painting opportunities, students will take advantage of traveling with Tina on a daily basis, gaining a personal understanding of how the artist recognizes the muse, through seeing light, connecting with people and making opportunities for magical experiences as she shares her process of painting from both life and photos during our explorations. The emphasis throughout this art journey is on a deeper discovery of the practice of creating the portrait from both life and photos, inspired by the exploration of South African culture — with the special commentary and experience of a private guide.
